The Benefit Of Piano Lessons

Written by Claudia Kargl

Learning to play the piano is the link instrument, most recommended by professionals, that bridges  an individual to learning a different type of instrument whether it be voice, guitar, violin…

How fortunate are children who have the privilege to start learning at a young age! Youngsters can use the advantage of their young age to appreciate the value of music and develop their skills/talents to blossom. At any age, it is of paramount importance to find a top notch professional prior to embarking on a music course of study. A top notch professional has the passion, dedication, knowledge and experience (flexibility in teaching) to cater to individual needs and guide a person along an amazing and gratifying musical journey.  ( It is not about first answering somebody on a phone call about how much is a lesson? Such a person who just is interested to know the charge per lesson is a mere bargain hunter and does not really care about the quality of a lesson!)

How many times have I seen a student coming to me for lessons, from another teacher, who has acquired many bad habits! Unfortunately, some students cannot change because these bad habits have become so ingrained in their system! Very sad and very frustrating…I have also on numerous occasions confronted students who have claimed that they learned to play the piano well by learning online or taking lessons following recordings to figure out the notes by ear!  THE RESULT: The timing is off, the hand position is catastrophic and the ability to use appropriate fingering and reading notes by name on the score are out the window! Never mind the use of the words technique and theory and what all that means!

It is critical to start from the first lesson with a qualified piano teacher who can give the best and prevent bad habits from even occurring in the first place. Establishing and building on a firm musical foundation is of optimal importance! Quality teachers have the wisdom to demonstrate and guide piano students to use valuable tricks on how to effectively manage practice time and achieve the most results in the least amount of time!  Practising at home between lessons is a must. For young children, a strong partnership in learning with parent(s), student and teacher is vital in the learning process. Everybody needs to be on the same page in understanding what needs to be achieved on an ongoing basis.

Another reason for taking piano lessons, at preferably an early age , is the tremendous abundance of beautiful piano pieces that have been written and are accessible in the world of today. Please do not rely exclusively on the local downtown Kelowna music store, marketing many method books,  to provide you with the necessary inspiration to learn piano!

A top-notch professional piano teacher will have the knowledge, experience and resources to inspire students to discover, experiment , explore, appreciate and listen to a wide range of musical genres of compositions from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, contemporary, to modern including, jazz, sacred, spirituals, rag, pop, rock, ballades, gospel, musicals, movie tunes and much more…

Learning to play an instrument, such as the piano, is not like signing up for brownies, a group swim lesson, a ballet class, hockey, taekwondo, or soccer. Piano playing involves the whole person: body, mind and soul. Finding that special professional piano teacher gives the student the opportunity to nurture interest, spark the imagination, and bring out unique creative and artistic qualities via the music connection. It is all about the ability to communicate emotions and feelings and express your inner thoughts outwards through the art of making music.

Being inspired by a top quality professional teacher/artist performer and promising students in a reputable studio can certainly whet the musical appetite and ignite interest to expand educational horizons and reach far to achieve fullest potential.

Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of a fire
